The Franciscan Orphanage at Tuka, Dalung, is run by several nuns belonging to the Catholic Franciscan Order and is headed by Sister Maria Esther.

At the moment there are around 82 children at the Orphanage covering a wide age group as the Orphanage has a policy of allowing older children to stay on until they are able to find employment to "pay their own way".

The children have been placed at the Orphanage for the following reasons:
  • Ekonomi Lemah which translates as parents in bad economic circumstances.
Most of the children at Tuka fall under this category.
  • Yatim which means no father.
  • Piatu means a child without a mother
  • Yatim-Piatu is a child without any parents.
The vast majority are female. This is explained by the parents trying harder to support the young boys, however hard it may be; this is not just a Balinese but an Asia wide thing. Older boys are sent to another Orphanage, Maria Goretti, at Palasari, for High School, since they are a bit harder to handle in the company of younger children.
